We make a great effort to find opportunities for community service with our members.  For our August 13 assembly titled, “Design & Service,” we’ll be visited by Michelle Gonzalez, Marketing Professional, Interior Designer, and owner of Room Revisions, LLC. She’ll talk with us about her time working with non-profit organizations, including “Suite Dreams of Michigan,” an organization which provides funding to gift a room makeover for children with special needs. We’ll hear about the families and how this impacts them, watch a clip or two from the WDIV 4 features of this work, and learn some things about interior design.

Some of our community members are going to the Concert of Colors in Midtown Detroit this weekend, and we’re inviting you to join us.  The Concert of Colors is metro Detroit’s free, annual, five-day long music festival, uniting metro Detroit’s diverse communities and ethnic groups by presenting musical acts from around the world.  RSVP on Meetup.com to join us.

World music, including the indigenous music of the Motor City, is the major focus of the Concert of Colors, but not the only focus. The festival also offers ethnic food and merchandise vendors and in 2014, restored the annual Forum on Community, Culture and Race that began in 2006 but has not taken place for the last few years. The Forum is a conference featuring presentations and discussion among artists, people connected to cultural institutions and community leaders to examine the role of arts and culture in overcoming racial and ethnic barriers.

You’re free to visit the concert anytime from the 12th-16th on your own, but if you want to join us on Sunday the 16th, here’s our schedule.

• 4:30:  We’ll meet at the Comerica Diversity stage for Laura Rain and the Caesars (soul/blues/r&b)

• TBD:   Grab dinner @ the food truck area

• TBD:   Wander around the 5 stages featuring music genres including: jazz, world, soul, experimental, rock, electronic & afro-fusion.

• 9:30:   Catch the last set of the night back @ the Comerica Diversity Stage-Rocky Dawuni (Ghanian reggae/Afrobeat)

The free event is in Midtown and the stages are all on or near Woodward Ave.

Wine with TED: “Truth And Lies”

The topic this month is “Truth and Lies.”  We live in a time where the line between fact and fiction is increasingly blurry.  Join us as we watch a TED Talk, drink wine (or beer or soda or flavored water or even coffee), and discuss with friends.

Showtime starts at 7:30

We’ll watch the first Talk and then break for 15 minutes or so to discuss it, refresh drinks, etc. Then we’ll watch the second Talk; when its finished we can discuss the second Talk, compare/contrast the two Talks, refresh drinks, go potty, etc. Then no more videos, just socializing. 🙂

The specific Talks will be a surprise, but they will both relate to the theme.

Co-Ed Recreational Kickball – 10 Players Needed

Let’s Play Some Kickball!

Sunday Assembly Detroit is putting together a team for the Co-Ed Recreational Kickball League which plays on Monday’s this summer at Bell Isle.  We need a total of 10 members.  The total team cost is $720, so we’re dividing cost for each member to $72.  Jerseys are included.

The actual schedule won’t be available until after registration is final.  We’ll meet for at least one practice before league play begins.  Time, location and date TBD.   If we don’t get 10 paid RSVPs by the 10th, everyone gets a refund.

LIMIT: 16 maximum teams, so start get your people together!  Jerseys provided. Game times are 6:30pm and 7:30pm

League Rules 

Now that Belle Isle is officially a State Park, all cars that enter the island are required to have the Recreation Passport.

The Recreation Passport has an annual cost of $11, and can be purchased at the entrance of Belle Isle, through the Secretary of State, or online when you renew your license.

Volunteers are critical to the mission and daily work of Forgotten Harvest. Without your help, we simply could not help those in need. We guarantee that your Forgotten Harvest experience will be one that you will never forget!

Working in the Forgotten Harvest Warehouse:

Count on a memorable three-hour volunteer experience! Volunteers are needed to re-pack fresh, nutritious food destined for the tables of those in need. This is a great opportunity for corporate groups, churches, organizations, families and individuals. We take groups of up to 40.

Warehouse Basics:

1:00 – 4:00 p.m shift

Additional important details:

Volunteers must be at least 12 years of age to volunteer.  Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
